FAQ
Questions about Foldbase
Foldbase is a native macOS file manager that adds typed properties and saved views on top of your real folders. It is still in development: what these answers describe works in the current development build, and the first release can still change. Where something is not decided yet, we say so. Availability and early access
Is Foldbase available now?
Not yet. Foldbase is in development and there is no download. Join the waitlist to hear about early access and to help shape what comes next.
What does “in development” mean?
The app is being built and tested. The features on this website work in the current development build, but the previews are concepts with fictional files, not screenshots of a finished product. Features, design and requirements can still change, and there is no release date yet.
How will early access work?
The first access is planned for invited testers. People on the waitlist will hear about early access by email after confirming their address. Joining the waitlist is free and does not guarantee an invitation.
How much will Foldbase cost?
Pricing has not been decided. Joining the waitlist is free and does not commit you to buying anything.
Who is behind Foldbase?
Foldbase is run by Andreas Armanious, a private individual based in Graz, Austria. Contact details are in the legal notice, and questions are welcome at hello@foldbase.app.
Your files and your privacy
Do I need to move or import my files?
No. Your files stay in their existing folders. Foldbase does not move them into a database; it adds properties and saved views on top of the folders you already use.
Where do my files live when I use Foldbase?
Exactly where they are today: in your folders on your Mac. Because the files are not copied into a separate library, Finder and your other apps keep opening and saving them as usual.
Does Foldbase work with iCloud Drive?
Yes, the first release is planned for files on your Mac’s local APFS disk and in iCloud Drive. Network shares and third-party cloud drives are not supported at first.
Does the Foldbase app send my data anywhere?
No. There is no account, and the app makes no network connections of its own. Properties, views, the search index and your sidebar are stored on your Mac.
Does this website access the files on my computer?
No. The previews on this website run in your browser with fictional files and cannot see your files. The website stores only your theme and privacy choices locally, and optional analytics runs only if you allow it.
Properties and views
What can I add to a file?
Six property types: text, select, date, number, checkbox and URL. Use them to describe files in a way that makes sense to you, for example a status, a project, a due date or a link.
Which views does Foldbase have?
Saved table and board views for each folder, with filters and a sort, and live groups that collect matching files from every folder. Tabs and up to four split panes keep several folders side by side.
How does search work?
Foldbase builds its own index of the folder you search in: names, paths, property values and the text of small files. It doesn’t rely on Spotlight, and the index stays on your Mac.
Which languages will Foldbase support?
English and German.
Requirements
Which Macs will it support?
The first release targets macOS 15 or newer on Macs with Apple silicon only. Final requirements will be confirmed before release.
Does Foldbase replace Finder?
Finder stays on your Mac and keeps working as before. Foldbase is a separate app that works with the same folders and adds properties and saved views to them.
